The Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC), in partnership with energy agencies in Canada, Mexico, and the United States, has launched the North American Energy Management Pilot Program to equip companies across North America with the resources to reduce energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions, and develop approaches for implementing ISO 50001 and the Superior Energy Performance® program in their respective facilities.

The program involves a series of training workshops to be held in 2016 in Canada, Mexico, and the United States. Qualified participants will learn how to apply a corporate-level energy management system and share best practices across multiple facilities, throughout North America and worldwide.

Selection Criteria

Senior-level commitment to energy management and energy performance improvement
Experience with energy management systems
Desire to pursue ISO 50001 or Superior Energy Performance® certification
Priority given to companies with facilities in all three countries: Canada, Mexico, and United States
Willingness to expand ISO 50001/SEP implementation to other North American or global facilities

International/National Recognition

Pilot Partners will be recognized at numerous high-profile organizations/events, including:

CEC Ministerial meeting
Clean Energy Ministerial (CEM) 7
International Partnership for Energy Efficiency
CEM Energy Management Working Group
North American Energy Ministers Communiqué
United States-Mexico Clean Energy and Climate Policy Task Force
Company Commitment

Company and facility management will need to commit personnel time and resources to attend trainings and implement an energy management system. Depending on facility size and complexity, estimated internal staff time required to support adequate implementation of the energy management system is half- to full-time equivalent (multiple people) over the 18-month implementation period to begin in early 2016.

Training costs will be shared between the company and the CEC, representing US$12,000 per company for up to three facilities enrolled in the same training location.* Once the training is completed, certification costs for ISO 50001 and SEP will be borne by the company.

ISO 50001

ISO 50001 provides a proven, internationally recognized system for planning, managing, measuring and continually improving energy performance in any organization that uses energy. ISO 50001 is based on the Plan-Do-Check-Act management system model of continual improvement as used by other international standards, such as ISO 9001 and ISO 14001.

Superior Energy Performance®

Superior Energy Performance®, a program established by the US Department of Energy, requires facilities to meet the ISO 50001 standard and also energy performance improvement criteria that are verified by a third-party auditor, quantifying energy savings and greenhouse gas emission reductions using a standardized approach.

Program Partners

The North American Energy Management Pilot Program is a partnership between the Comisión Nacional para el Uso Eficiente de la Energía (National Commission for the Efficient Use of Energy), Natural Resources Canada and the US Department of Energy.

*Funding for companies may be possible through national energy programs
